Libertyville 2010 Historic Walking Tour "The American Front Porch"

Mainstreet Libertyville is hosting the 7th annual self-guided Historic Walking Tour on Saturday from 10am-2pm. This year’s focus is “The American Front Porch.”

According to a press release from Mainstreet Libertyville:

“The front porch began to proliferate in American architecture in the Mid-Nineteenth Century. By the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it had become a nearly universal component of the middle-class American home. The popularity of the porch was in large part the result of social and technological changes, including increased leisure time, advances in construction technology and new interest in nature and the American landscape. Despite a loss in popularity around the 1930s, the porch is an important part of much new residential construction today.”

There will be about 20 selected homes on the tour. Mainstreet Libertyville volunteers will be in Cook Park and will have Tour Booklets available for a $10 donation which will provide a brief history of the homes and directions. Several of the homes will have gardens and interiors open for viewing. So enjoy a walk, bike or ride around historic Libertyville on Saturday for the Historic Walking Tour of the “The American Front Porch”

Disc Golf Courses in Libertyville and Mundelein

Lake County has many disc golf (or frisbee golf) courses, and 4 of them in Mundelein and Libertyville alone! One of the area’s most popular is at Adler Park in Libertyville. The Adler Park disc golf course offers a decent challenge to most levels of players. Adler Park in Libertyville is nestled between the Des Plaines River and Milwaukee Ave. just North of downtown Libertyville and South of Buckley Road (Route 137). With mature trees and the Des Plaines River it is one of the areas most scenic. There are several holes that are a fair distance between each other and require more walking than you would think for a 9 hole course.

There are also 3 disc golf courses in Mundelein; Diamond Lake Slough, Leo Leathers Park, and Fremont School. Keep in mind that Fremont is closed during school hours.

What is your favorite disc golf course in Lake County? Have any comments or suggestions for the 4 disc golf courses in Libertyville and Mundelein?

Don’t forget the Des Plaines River Trail, that runs adjacent to Adler Park in Libertyville, offers plenty for those wanting to bike, hike or ride.

Lake Forest Trying on the Denver Boot for Style

Beginning January 1, 2010, Lake Forest will beginning using the Denver Boot, which is already common in Chicago and several other Lake County villages. Although the outstanding parking tickets don’t compare to what the city of Chicago faces, Lake Forest could recoup as much as $21,000 if the top 16 parking ticket offenders paid up, according to Deputy Police Chief Glenn Burmeister. As villages struggle to make budgets work with a struggling economy, every dollar helps.
The boot clamps onto the wheel of a vehicle and immobilizes it. Lake Forest will require all outstanding parking tickets and fines to be paid, plus a $100 fee in order to remove the boot. Lake Forest is giving those with outstanding parking tickets a grace period of this month to pay their fines. Currently, a typical parking ticket in Lake Forest costs $15. Beginning in the New Year, those that haven’t paid, may be the first to experience the “Lake Forest” Boot.
Nearby Libertyville has been using the boot, but only sparingly and when they do, payment usually follows soon after.
So if you live, work, shop, visit, or commute in Lake Forest, make sure your parking tickets are paid!

Libertyville MainStreet director quits

Libertyville MainStreet director retires. Randy Nelson decided to retire after the pleasure of the job turned into more of a grind. Not to mention that he had a 2 hour commute each day. I personally had the opportunity to talk with Randy during my efforts with Waukegan Mainstreet and can candidly say he was always helpful, thoughtful and diligent. Living in neighboring Vernon Hills, we frequented many of the MainStreet Libertyville events and had a great time along with many other residents. Pam Hume, who has been involved with the organization since it’s inception in 1989 will serve as interim director.

Libertyville Taco El Norte Grand Opening

I think this will make the 12th Chicago area Taco El Norte restaurant when it opens it doors on Thursday, November 5. The Mexican restaurant is occupying the space of former Grill 21 on Milwaukee Ave. in Libertyville, IL. Living in nearby Gregg’s Landing, I’ve passed by the restaurant many times over the last couple months and it appears they have completely renovated the space. What caught my eye today was the sign announcing their Grand Opening on Thursday. I didn’t immediately find any information online about the new location in Libertyville, but the sign was good enough for me to share with you that we’ll be stopping in for some chips, salsa and margaritas one day soon.
