Field of Dreams Becomes Reality for Lake County Fielders

The long awaited, and much talked about, moment finally arrived. Lake County experienced it’s first baseball game on Friday afternoon. The Lake County Fielders played in front of over 6,800 fans on Friday and even though the scoreboard showed a loss, it was a win for Lake County baseball fans.

The Lake County Fielders had their first 20 games scheduled on the road to allow for the new stadium to be built. But with a site change, stadium redesign and probably more politics than most of us want to know about, the Fielders needed to play the first series of “home” games in Kenosha at Carthage College. On Friday, all that was forgotten as the crowd showed up on a beautiful midsummer afternoon to watch a classic American past time at very affordable prices.

While the stadium isn’t complete, there is a field and dugouts. The lights are still being installed so games scheduled for 6pm or 7pm will be played at 4:45pm until they are installed later this month.

Today the Lake County Fielders will open a 3 game set with the Joliet Jackhammers at 1pm. All tickets are general admission and cost only $5. Here you can find directions to the Lake County Fielders stadium and parking information. And here is the complete Lake County Fielders July schedule.

One of my original post about the Lake County Fielders received some of the most opinionated comments I’ve ever received. I’m curious to see what people have to say now. Feel free to leave your comments and thoughts below. Have you been to Lake County Fielders Stadium yet? What did you think?

Catch and Release

Now there’s a great place to enjoy fishing right in Libertyville! Butler Lake in Libertyville now allows catch and release fishing on the lake and it’s tributaries. Butler Lake is located off Lake St. just west of Milwaukee Ave. The Libertville village trustees recently adopted an ordinance that allows for catch and release fishing in designated areas on Butler Lake. You must get an annual permit from Village Hall or the Parks and Recreation Office. There is no cost for Libertyville residents and a $10 fee for non-residents.

The permit will allow you to fish on Butler Lake in the designated fishing areas using hook and line only. Fishing off the Lake Street bridge is prohibited. The use of motor boats on the lake is strictly forbidden. If you want to know more about fishing or get involved with local fishing enthusiasts, check out the Libertyville Fishing Club.

Don’t forget, not far from Butler Lake is Main Street Smokehouse. Stop by for some amazing regional BBQ after a day of fishing!

The event is open to children ages 5-13. Although advance registration was required, I heard as of yesterday they still had a few spots and would accept some walk ups. The cost is $5 for residents and $6 for non-residents.

The day will start out with instruction and demonstrations dropping lines in the water at Big Bear Lake. Bait will be provided and there will be a limited number of fishing poles available. In addition prizes will be awarded in various ages categories for first fish caught and the largest fish caught.

So bring the kids by at 9am or just stop in and see how much fun all the kids are having catching some fish! After you are done, head over to Eloise Chicago (at Route 60 and Milwaukee Ave.) for some lunch.

Come for a Cinnamon Roll and Stay for some Coffee

When it comes to coffee, the Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein and Vernon Hills area has plenty of options, but one of my favorites is Eloise Chicago in Vernon Hills. They are one of the few, if not only, area Lake County coffee shop featuring Metropolis Coffee. But Eloise Chicago is much more than a coffee shop. A bakery and cafe would also be perfect terms to describe Eloise Chicago. Their cinnamon rolls are a sweet treat at any time of the day and what Eloise started with. But now they make homemade bread and muffins every day. So the sandwich and soup or salad selections make for a great lunch options.

Eloise Chicago has been in the same location at 701 N. Milwaukee Ave. #312, Vernon Hills for over 21 years. You can view the namesake of Eloise Chicago, Eloise Torres on a Vernon Hills video interview.

So don’t just go for the coffee. See their barista skills at work on an espresso or latte and enjoy it with a cinnamon roll! Or stop by for lunch after enjoying a canoe trip on the Des Plaines River from Offshore, located a few door down in Rivertree Plaza.

Special thanks to Jeff Harris who knew my affection for good coffee and suggested I try Eloise Chicago.

Have Kayak? Will Paddle!

On a warm summer day in Lake County, why not escape to the shade and water in a canoe or kayak on the Des Plaines River! Don’t have a canoe or kayak? No problem! Offshore offers rentals of tadem conoes and solo or tadem kayaks. Offshore is located on Route 60, just east of Milwaukee Ave., in Vernon Hills and only steps from the Route 60 canoe launch on the Des Plaines River.

If you feel you need a little instruction before heading out on the Des Plaines River by yourself, Offshore offers classes on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons during the summer months. Private lessons are available as well as Eskimo Rolling classes for more advanced paddlers. You don’t need to bring anything, other than perhaps a change of clothes, water, hat, etc. All lessons are done on Big Bear Lake nearby in Vernon Hills.

In addition to canoe and kayak rentals and classes, Offshore is one of Chicagoland’s largest sellers of inflatable boats, canoes and kayaks. Plus they have a complete line of accessories. Be sure to call Offshore at (847) 362-4880 for hours, as they change by season and depending on private group events. So stop by and tell them you found them on Lake County Happens.
