Moustache for Movember and a great cause

I just joined The Chicago Guys in the Movember movement!

Check out my daily progress with photo updates!

Movember Moustache

I have decided to join a global movement that is bringing much needed attention to cancers that affect men.  I’m doing this by growing a Moustache this Movember, the month formerly known as November. My commitment is to grow a moustache all November and I am hoping that you will support my efforts by making a donation.  The funds raised go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LIVESTRONG).

What many people don’t know is that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 18-35.  Facts like these have convinced me I should get involved.

To make a donation, you can either:

•    Click this link http://us.movember.com/mospace/270398/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account , or
•    Write a check payable to ‘Movember Foundation’, referencing my Registration Number 270398 and mailing it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 2726, Venice, CA 90294-2726.

All donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund:

•    The LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance program which has the goal of improving survival rates and quality of life for young adults with cancer between the ages of 15 and 40.
•    Research initiatives to further understand the biology of adolescent and young adult cancers.

For more details on how the funds raised from previous campaigns have been used and the impact Movember is having please go to http://us.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs.

Thank you

Fresh Foods site ordered to be demolished in Libertyville

The site that held so much promise when I started 2 years ago, now has a demolition order against it. The Village of Libertyville has been granted a motion to have the owners bring the property to code within 30 days. This would included demo of the existing steel structure, removal of all construction materials and covering with top soil. Read the full article from the Daily Herald http://budurl.com/qw9w

Vernon Hills Home Sales Last 6 Months

Real estate data and statistics for Vernon Hills single family homes sold in the last 6 months

Vernon-Hills-6 month-SFH-0Detached single family home sales in Vernon Hills have seen the average median sold price increase over 5% from $415,000 in the previous 12 week period to $437,583 in the last 12 week period. The single family homes under contract in Vernon Hills have seen a decrease in the average median price of 3% over the same time period, down to $459,009. This is still higher than the average median sales price over the last 6 months. It will be interesting to see how the sold prices compare to the under contract prices over the coming weeks. Perhaps sold prices will continue to increase, or if higher price homes under contract will not close.

Dick's coming to Vernon Hills?

As reported in the Vernon Hills Review today, the village of Vernon Hills recently agreed to a sales tax revenue sharing agreement with Chase Properties, the owners of the Hawthorn Hills Fashion Square shopping center located on the southwest corner of Townline Rd. (Route 60) and Milwaukee Ave. (Route 21). Currently the center is more than half empty and Village of Vernon Hills Trustees voted unanimously to support drafting an economic incentive agreement.

According to Assistant Village Manager John Kalmar, the village would receive 1 percent of the sales in tax receipts, which would then be split with the shopping center owner pursuant to the terms of the agreement. The maximum the owner could receive over the term of the agreement is $1.17 million, after which all the sales tax money generated would go the village.

Dick’s Sporting Goods would occupy the 52,000 square foot space that was previously Wickes Furniture. The owner has a letter of intent with Dick’s and indicated they hope to open as early as July of 2010.

What are your thoughts on sales tax sharing with property owners to fill empty stores?

Vernon Hills Old Navy "One Can Make a Difference"

My fiance recently started as a manager at the Old Navy in Vernon Hills. Starting today, they have a promotion going on through the weekend.  Normally I wouldn’t promote another company, but this is for a good cause. Starting today, October 21, and running through October 25, if you donate a nonperishable food item (no glass or bulk quantities, please) you receive 10% off your entire purchase. All donations will go to the local food bank. Even if you don’t want to buy anything, stop in and make a donation.

As far as I know, most of the area Old Navy’s will have the same offer. If you stop in the Vernon Hills store, Be sure to say hi to Lori and tell them you found out about the promotion from me!

Home Buyer Tax Credit to be Extended?

There’s been a lot of talk about the first time home buyer tax credit being extended past the current December 1, 2009 expiration. The talk in congress has gone beyond just extending the tax credit, but also increasing and/or expanding it. According to Realtor.org post yesterday, aides are hinting that it will be extended. Here’s the content from the post yesterday:

Aides: Home Buyer Tax Credit Extension Likely
Extending the First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit, due to expire at the end of November, is high on the Democratic Congressional to-do list, legislative aides said.

After Wednesday’s meeting with President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) released a statement that the government should “continue efforts to strengthen the housing market by extending the home buyer tax credit.”

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, who is a consultant to Democrats in the administration and Congress, is advocating extending the credit through August and making it available to all home buyers. He said failure to extend the credit just as more foreclosures enter the market will push housing prices down.

Also, on Thursday, the House is expected pass legislation to extend the credit through 2010 for people who have been out of the country in the military, intelligence, or foreign services.

This is encouraging news for home buyers, but as I wrote about earlier, there are no guarantees when it comes to politics.

What are your thoughts? Do you think extending/expanding the tax credit will help or hurt in the long run?

This just in from IL Assoc. of Realtors: Re-1st Time Homebuyer Tax Credit

I was just thinking of how much time was left for the first time homebuyer tax credit. Appropriately, I  just received this email from Illinois Association of Realtors…

“62 days and counting for first-time homebuyer tax credit. Remind your first-time buyers that time is of the essence if they want to take advantage of the federal tax credit worth up to $8,000. Buyers need to be moving now to find a home, secure financing and close the transaction before the November 30 deadline if they want to use the tax credit. The same deadline applies to the Illinois Home Start Tax Credit Advance Loan Program, which allows qualifying buyers to use the tax credit toward their down payment.”

62 days is just about the amount of time to close a normal loan these days, but 62 days is to November 30. Remember Thanksgiving weekend is just before the 30th (as mentioned in this post). You really only have about 51 days to comfortably close, which is still very doable. Only if you don’t start now and act quickly.

The home buying process is probably the largest purchase of your life, so don’t rush into it, but if you’ve thought about it and are ready, don’t wait another minute.
