Give Us Your Blood

Today will mark the beginning of the Independence Day weekend, filled with plenty of parades, festivals and fireworks. As we enter the heart of summer, it’s important to remember that it’s also the time when area blood demand is at it’s highest and blood levels are low.

The Mundelein Fire Department and the Lake County Fire Chiefs Association are holding a Summer Blood Drive Challenge Friday, July 2, from 1pm until 7pm. The goal is to collect 100 units of blood. To make it a celebration, there will be a free barbecue and the Mundelein Best Buy will sponsor a “Best Buy Zone” with televisions, Wii and music!

This will be a special blood drive in memory of firefighter Brian Carey of Homewood Fire Department who died in the line of duty earlier this year. He was a Lifesource donor and all participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt in firefighter Carey’s honor.

Last weekend the McHenry Fire Department collected 112 units, so the challenge is on to collect even more today! Come visit the Mundelein Fire Station #1 at 1000 N. Midlothian Road in Mundelein today from 1-7pm.

If you are not able to donate today and still wish to participate, you may visit the Mundelein Lifesource location in the Jewel shopping center on Lake St. and use MN10 for the sponsor code.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for all the information on local parades and fireworks this fourth of July weekend. Or just receive Lake County Happens updates to your email.
